Hey there!

We hope that you have been enjoying all the new language strategies that we have been sharing, and most importantly that you have been testing them out on your little ones. This week I want to challenge you to do ten things to put them into action. If doing ten feels like too much for your busy week, cut the list in half and slowly work your way up. We want you to be encouraged, not overwhelmed.

  1. Get down to your child’s level for play and interaction. Being face to face helps your child to connect with you.

  2. Choose one routine that is already part of your daily interactions with your child and think about ways you can add language to that routine.

  3. Use simple language that is at his level of communication development.

  4. Limit the questions used, try commenting on what he is doing or interacting with instead.

  5. Follow your child’s lead. Notice what she is interested in and go with the flow.

  6. Play ‘people play’ games to keep a child engaged. Social games like “Peek-a-Boo” and “Round and Round a Garden” are always fun, and encourage a child to request more turns.

  7. Encourage your child to imitate your actions and vocalisations. Imitation is an important step in language development.

  8. Remember the power in waiting a little bit longer to give your child a chance to take a turn.

  9. Sing familiar songs with your child and give her a chance to fill in key words. E.g. Row Row Row your…….Gently down the………

  10. The most important one: Have Fun! Don’t be afraid to act silly, get excited, use a monster voice, do a crazy dance. Learning language is supposed to be fun and these are the things that keep children engaged.

Do you accept the challenge? Go forth and crush those 10 things (over and over again)! You got this!
