We usually get many calls to the clinic from parents expressing concern that they, or others around them, have observed certain signs/red flags in their little ones and question whether it could be Autism. Sometimes it can be easy to miss some of the early signs of Autism, especially when a toddler has other strong skills such as proficiency identifying numbers, letters colours and other pre-academic skills.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder defined by persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction, accompanied by restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities.

We’ve found an excellent online resource which we always recommend to parents. Autism Navigator highlights many of the “red flags” or characteristics of Autism in children. It also provides great resources for parents to help explain the disorder in greater detail, and has a free online course for anyone who wants to learn more about Autism.

In recent years research has shown that early signs of Autism can be identified even from 9 to 16 months, which allows for intervention at an earlier age.

The team at Autism Navigator has created a lookbook called 16 Early Signs of Autism by 16 months, which parents can use to review early signs, and complete a checklist of their child’s language and behaviours. Click the image below to access this resource.

If you have any concerns about your child’s language and/or social communication feel free to contact us at the clinic.
